Minister of Communication and Information Emphasizes the Important Role of the Press to Maintain Information Integrity in the Era of AI

JAKARTA - Minister of Communication and Digital Meutya Hafid emphasized that strategic collaboration between the government, the press ecosystem, and digital platforms is the key to answering the challenges of the digital transformation era.

According to him, in the midst of the rapid flow of digital content and the increasing impact of misinformation from artificial intelligence (AI), the press should not sacrifice public trust for the sake of speed, algorithms, or technological efficiency.

"The use of artificial intelligence in journalistic practice must continue to make the public interest the main compass," said the Minister of Communication and Information, quoted on Monday, February 9.

He also emphasized that the presence of credible and independent press is becoming increasingly crucial as a guardian of information integrity and a healthy public space.

"In the wave of digital and AI transformation, the presence of credible and independent press is not an option, but a basic requirement of democracy," Meutya said further.

The policy emphasizes content protection, ethics of AI use, and news authenticity. Among others, AI regulations and Ethics Guidelines released by the Press Council through the Press Council Regulation Number 1 of 2025 regarding guidelines for the use of AI in journalistic works.

The government has also issued Presidential Regulation (Perpres) Number 32 of 2024 (Publisher Rights) to require digital platforms to be responsible for journalistic content.

Meutya added that these regulations aim to address the inequality of the digital ecosystem and protect local media from the threat of AI that takes over content.

"The government emphasizes that AI governance must be human-centric and journalism must remain humanistic in the midst of AI attacks to maintain public trust," he said.
