JAKARTA - Meta Platforms Inc. has begun to lay off more than 1,000 jobs from the company's Reality Labs division.

This pruning is part of Meta's plan to refocus on developing its AI wearable devices such as Ray-Ban.

In an internal statement from Meta's Chief Technology Officer, Andrew Bosworth, which was seen by Bloomberg, affected employees will be notified of the layoffs starting Tuesday morning local time.

This termination of employment is expected to affect about 10% of employees within the Reality Labs group, which has about 15,000 employees.

Meta's plans will now focus on mobile devices, which could mean a combination of their future wearable devices as well as existing mobile apps.

"With a larger potential user base and the fastest growth rate today, we are shifting our team and resources almost exclusively to mobile devices to continue to accelerate adoption there," Bosworth wrote.

Meta hasn't completely scrapped its VR headset plans, but according to Bosworth, the VR division will "operate as a leaner, flatter organization with a more focused roadmap to maximize long-term sustainability."

Meanwhile, not long ago, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced Meta Compute, a new strategic initiative that will focus on building large-scale computing infrastructure to support the development of the next generation of artificial intelligence (AI).

Zuckerberg called Meta Compute an important foundation for the company's ambition to bring "personal superintelligence" to billions of users around the world.
