JAKARTA - The British independent online safety watchdog (Ofcom), announced that it has opened a formal investigation into X, for allegedly abusing Grok AI to produce pornographic content.

The investigation, which is based on the UK's Online Safety Act, was conducted to determine whether the platform has complied with its obligations to protect the public in the UK or not.

The indecent images produced without consent and sexual content involving children have the potential to fall into the category of child sexual abuse material (CSAM).

Ofcom said it had contacted X on January 5, 2026 and given the company until January 9 to explain the protection measures it had put in place for users in the UK.

An Ofcom spokesperson said the report regarding the use of Grok to create and distribute illegal content was "extremely worrying", especially as it could potentially harm children.

"Platforms must protect the public in the UK from illegal content. We will not hesitate to investigate if there is any indication of failure to comply with legal obligations," he said.

If found guilty, X could face a fine of up to 18 million pounds sterling (Rp409 billion) or 10 percent of the company's global revenue, whichever is greater.

In the most serious cases, the court can even order the blocking of X services in the UK or ask payment providers and advertisers to stop cooperating.
