JAKARTA - Google is again expanding the capabilities of Health Connect by testing support for tracking health symptoms and alcohol consumption. This is a step that reaffirms Android's ambition to become a more serious and structured cross-application health data center.

Health Connect, which was first introduced in 2022, initially only supported about 40 types of health data in a limited number of categories. Over time, Google has consistently added feature coverage and application compatibility.

In the latest development related to Android 16, Health Connect now supports yoga and meditation sessions, built-in step tracking, as well as structured medical records such as allergies, vaccinations, and laboratory results.

This latest expansion adds more detailed symptom monitoring features. Based on findings on the Android development version, this system will be able to recognize and record general conditions such as abdominal pain, fever, insomnia, respiratory disorders, nausea, and joint stiffness.

At the same time, Google is also preparing alcohol consumption tracking that includes various types of drinks, not just rough calculations.

In terms of appearance, Google has also revamped the Health Connect interface. The latest Android Canary version shows a settings page that now prioritizes a list of connected apps, instead of the most recent data access history. Permission controls are also grouped by category, making privacy management feel more neat and not confusing.

With richer symptom and consumption data, Health Connect is geared to build a more accurate personal health profile. However, Google still insists on its relatively cautious approach. In addition to step tracking, most data still relies on third-party apps, not collected directly by Google.

This move puts Health Connect at the backbone of the Android health ecosystem, not a single health app. The strategy is clear: Google doesn't want to be a doctor, but wants to be the most diligent health archivist on users' phones. If these features are really released widely, Android will slowly change from just a step recorder to a more mature digital health dashboard.
