JAKARTA Developers of artificial intelligence (AI) from China, DeepSee, appear in public for the first time in almost a year after becoming a global sensation. However, instead of expressing optimism, a senior company researcher actually expressed his pessimistic view of the impact of AI on society.
In the World Internet Conference held by the Chinese government in the city of Wuzhen, Zhejiang province, Chen Deli, a senior researcher at DeepSeek, spoke in front of executives from five other AI companies including Unitree and BrainCo. These six companies are known in China as the 'six little AI dragons'.
When asked about DeepSek's global success and an open-source approach that is considered to drive AI's progress, Chen said that this technology is indeed very helpful for humans in the short term. However, in the medium to long term, AI has the potential to replace a lot of human work and cause huge social shocks.
In the next 5 to 10 years, AI can take over some human work. In 10 to 20 years, this technology may take over almost everything. At that time, people will face big challenges, and technology companies will have to play a role as pembela, Chen said. I am very positive on the technology, but I think the impact on society will be negative.

Since attracting the world's attention in January 2025 by releasing a low-cost AI model that outperforms models from the United States, DeepSek has barely appeared in public. The only exception occurred in February, when founder and CEO Liang Wenfeng met President Xi Jinping on a television show with local entrepreneurs.
Since then, both Liang and the company have never made public comments about their success and chose to be absent from various large technology conferences in the country.
The Chinese government is now positioning DeepSek as a symbol of the ability and resilience of national technology amid rising technological rivalry with the United States.
Despite not releasing major updates since January, every DeepSek announcement remains in the spotlight. In September 2025, the company introduced a version of V3, the latest experimental' model that is claimed to be more efficient in the training process and able to handle long text better than the previous generation.
DeepSek also plays an important role in encouraging the development of China's domestic AI ecosystem, including the domestic semiconductor industry. A number of chip manufacturers such as Cambricon and Huawei are known to have made hardware compatible with the DeepSek model.
In August, DeepSek's announcement of a new model optimized for chips made in China sparked a surge in stock prices of domestic semiconductor companies.
Although Victor Chen's view tends to be pessimistic, DeepSeek's presence in Wuzhen is a sign that the company is back to being active after almost a year of avoiding the spotlight. However, their main message this time is clear: AI progress must be balanced with social responsibility and awareness of the risks that follow.
