JAKARTA – Google introduced its latest video call technology in the Google I/O 2021 event. The United States (US) tech giant also showed off a new way to make video calls.

Google's new technology makes video calls even more real. Callers and the caller will face each other in a screen resembling a large mirror.

This allows both of them to speak directly. All this is realized thanks to 3D technology called "Project Starline".

Actually the technology is similar to a phone booth, only it is equipped with a number of components that support it such as a 65-inch light field screen, a camera, a depth sensor that serves to capture 3D imagery, and lights. A number of supporting components present Starline technology that is able to display images of interlocutes in a real three-dimensional format.

This technology only applies to individual video calls. Project Starline doesn't support group video calls. Google showed a demo video, in which two people were making a video call in a small room.

One user of the Google video call stated that the video call looked real as if the two were facing off.

"It's as if he's right in front of me," said one User of the Google video call.

The video call booth is currently available in limited quantities at Google offices located in Mountain View, New York, and Seattle. To date, Google has revealed that starline technology has been used by one hundred employees.

Google plans to sell the 3D video call booth to business people for corporate purposes such as virtual meetings and so on. However, Google's Starline technology is still in its development stage. Google plans to conduct several trials to improve Project Starline.

According to Wired, the trial will be conducted with a number of partners such as cloud companies, media, and telemedicine applications by the end of 2021.
