Jakarta Apple is getting more and more serious about making iPhones a 'all the keys to modern life', from payments to car access. One of the features that is getting more and more attention is the Apple Car Key, which allows users to lock, unlock, turn on, and even share car keys directly from the iPhone, without the need to bring physical key fobs.
This feature was first announced in the WWDC 2020 event, and has been available since iOS 13.4. Apple developed this technology with a consortium of auto connectivity standards, utilizing ultra-wideband (U1) chips so users can open cars even when the iPhone is in a bag or pocket.
Initially only BMW supported Car Key in BMW Series 5 of 2021, but now its support has expanded. At WWDC 2025, Apple announced an additional 13 new brands, including Cadillac, Porsche, Smart, and others.

The Car Key feature is stored in the Apple Wallet app, and can be used even up to five hours after the iPhone runs out of battery. One of the main advantages is the ability to share digital keys via iMessage, which can be activated or revoked at any time via iCloud practical solutions for family or friends.
