JAKARTA Google has launched a new feature to simplify the process of joining Google Meet using companion mode. This feature has been launched in stages since August 4, 2025.
Google says that this new feature uses ultrasonic proximity detectors so users can check-in automatically when in the conference room. This ability will make meetings more efficient and smooth.
This automatic room check-in feature uses a laptop microphone to detect ultrasonic signals. If there is a signal coming from the hardware, the user can check-in without the need to take manual steps like before.
Once the software is detected, this Google Meet will highlight the Use Companion Mode button. This capability is here to help users ensure that the meeting will run without annoying audio feedback.

"To simplify joining meetings from conference rooms and prevent annoying audio feedback, Google Meet now smartly guides you to the best joining options," Google said on the Workspace Update page.
Before accessing this new feature, there are several technical limitations to note. This feature can only be accessed via Meet in Chrome browser. Distance detection also only works in the call waiting room and shortly after joining the companion mode.
This feature will not work on certain pages such as g.co/present or g.co/companion. According to Google's test results, this new feature will work on certified or officially supported peripheral devices.
