JAKARTA - The Taiwanese government announced an ambitious plan to launch the "Ten Main AI Infrastructure Projects" program which is targeted to inject an economic value of 15 trillion Taiwan dollars (equivalent to IDR 8,351 trillion) by 2040. This strategic move is part of Taiwan's efforts to establish its position as a key player in the development of global artificial intelligence.

Prime Minister of Tiawan, Cho Jung-tai through his official Facebook account stated that Taiwan will take advantage of its advantages in the information and communication technology (ICT) sector and its dominance in the world's semiconductor industry to transform into an influential "smart technology island" in the international AI scene.

The project's main focus includes the development of three cutting-edge technologies: photonic silicon being heavily developed by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), a Taiwanese chipmaker giant; AI-based robotics by utilizing established hardware supply chains; as well as quantum technology that will form a new industry.

Support for this program comes from various industries, including from Foxconn which has formed the Taiwan AI Robotics Industry Great Alliance. This alliance aims to strengthen the domestic AI robotics development ecosystem through collaboration between industry actors.

Taiwan's grand plan also includes the development of sovereign AI to ensure technology independence, development of advanced computing infrastructure, and equitable development of AI in all regions. The government is committed to implementing AI solutions in various industrial sectors as well as attracting AI innovation investment through venture funds worth more than 100 billion Taiwan dollars.

This program is targeted to create 500,000 new jobs and establish three world-class research centers. With this strategic move, Taiwan has ambitions not only to strengthen the domestic economy but also to position itself as a global level AI talent and innovation center.

"We have all the supporting elements to become leaders in the AI era, from semiconductor advantages, digital infrastructure, to superior human resources," Prime Minister Cho said in a statement.

Analysts predict this program will further strengthen Taiwan's position in global technology competition, particularly amid technological tensions between the US and China. Taiwan hopes to take advantage of this momentum to create new competitive advantages beyond the semiconductor industry that has been a mainstay so far.
