Australian Finance Minister Jim Chalmers on Wednesday, January 29 appealed to Australians to be careful in using the Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) model, DeepSek. This warning makes Australia the latest country to express concerns over the use of the technology.

"We urge Australians to be careful of this new technology," Chalmers told a news conference on Wednesday. "We continue to receive various inputs regarding this matter."

DeepSek, a low-cost Chinese AI model that has been said to threaten the dominance of rivals from the United States, has rocked the global market since its launch this week. Nvidia shares, the leader of the AI chip market, fell 17% on Monday before finally gaining again.

Meanwhile, US officials on Tuesday, January 28 revealed that they were investigating the national security implications of DeepSeek's whereabouts.

DeepSek, which is designed to be more efficient in data and cost usage, has sparked debates across countries about its potential impact on data security and technology geopoliticals.

Until now, concerns regarding the safety and supervision of the use of AI models such as DeepSek are increasingly becoming a concern, both at the national and global levels.
