JAKARTA Over the past few months, SpaceX has focused on building a Starlink network in orbit with Direct to Cell capabilities. This capability is developed so that satellite signals can be directly connected to mobile phones.

This service is still limited because it is still being developed by SpaceX. However, the company plans to launch its service to Ukraine via Kyivstar, the country's largest mobile operator. The two just formed partnerships on Monday, December 30.

Citing from a Reuters report, the two have signed a Starlink agreement contract and Kyivstar will deliver the service to mobile phones in the fourth quarter of next year. That way, customers don't need to rely on WIFI routers.

Next year, Starlink Direct to Cell will only operate for messaging. However, this capability will be developed the following year so that customers can rely on Starlink satellites to send voice messages or data.

Starlink Direct to Cell is capable of connecting directly to mobile devices because the launched satellite is equipped with a modem that functions like a signal tower. This modem emits signals from space and is captured directly by mobile phones.

Ukraine is the 8th country to receive the service. Apart from the US, which became the first country, SpaceX has brought Starlink with Direct to Cell capabilities in several other countries, including Japan, New Zealand, and others.

This is not the first time SpaceX has collaborated with Ukraine in delivering its satellite service. Some time ago, the company owned by Elon Musk had provided internet connectivity to help people in the midst of war.
