Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) Meutya Hafid said that they do not yet have regulations governing the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) at the government level.

However, they already have a Circular (SE) that regulates the ethics of using AI. Based on Meutya's statement, Indonesia was one of the first countries in ASEAN to make SE AI Ethics. This SE was issued before President Prabowo Subianto's administration.

"(SE) is also the same spirit as the President. If there is advances in information technology, we also want matters related, for example with ethics, it is maintained. Indeed, this has not been raised to the level of government regulations, it is still SE," said Meutya when met at the AI for Indonesia event on Wednesday, December 4.

Meutya added that regulations that regulate the use of AI will be inaugurated if the government considers that the Indonesian people, including their infrastructure needs, are ready. That way, the rules that the government makes will not hinder the development of AI.

"But again, for regulation, the principle is that innovation must occur. So, regulations must not hinder innovation, but at the same time legal certainty must also exist to protect national interest or national interest," explained Meutya.

According to the former news announcer, Indonesia still lacks infrastructure. Although urban areas seem quite ready, there are still many areas that do not have good infrastructure. Therefore, Komdigi will focus on making improvements first.

"First, we will see the readiness of the ecosystem, yes," said Meutya. "Then also the community is prepared through digital literacy specifically for AI so that the people are also ready to take advantage of it and then of course the regulations will accompany it."

If all the things needed are ready, Komdigi will prepare stricter rules in using AI. According to Meutya, making regulations at the government level can be done easily because Indonesia already has a SE that regulates the AI code of ethics.
