Ukrainian Troops Thwart Tank Efforts To Russian Armored Vehicles Reach Defense Near Kupiansk City

JAKARTA - Ukraine's General Staff said the country's forces managed to thwart Russia's military efforts to penetrate the near defense of the northeastern city of Kupiansk on Wednesday.

The General Staff report posted on Facebook said Russian troops attacked in four waves and deployed about 15 equipment, including tanks, armored vehicles and mine clearance systems.

"With skilled and decisive action, our defenders stopped the enemy, destroyed all of its armored vehicles, and eliminated most of its personnel," the report said.

Several Russian troops, he said, wore uniforms resembling Ukrainian military uniforms, a practice that was considered a war crime.

It is known that the Kupiansk were seized by Russian troops in the early days of their invasion in February 2022. It was recaptured by Ukrainian forces in a flash strike a few months later.

In recent months, the region has experienced increased activity by Russian troops.

Meanwhile, DeepState, Ukraine's popular military blog, said two columns of Russian troops and equipment had entered Kupiansk after it was dark.

Russian soldiers were scattered throughout the city, but Ukrainian troops attacked armored vehicles in the city and in the surrounding forests, destroying parts of the group.

A separate General Staff report reported massive military activity south of Pokrovsk, Russia's main target of progress, with Ukrainian troops fending off all but one in 36 attacks.

Reuters was unable to independently verify warfield reports.

Separately, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in his evening video address, said the report submitted by the Ukrainian Military Commander General Oleksandr Syrsyi was focused on the Donetsk region, Russia's main theater progress to the west, along with the Russian movement near Kupiansk.

In the Donetsk region, prosecutors said Russian attacks killed two residents in Shevchenko village, west of the Russian-occupied main city of Donetsk.
