JAKARTA - On October 9, 2024, Google officially launched a redesign of the Gemini app for Android users, which presents a simpler and more intuitive main screen display. This change began to be introduced at the end of September and is now widely available, both for paid and free account users. However, iOS users still haven't got this update.
The previous design featured the "Gemini" or "Gemini Advanced" logo, a suggestion carousel (which can be hidden), and the "Chats & Gems" section which shows the last three user queries. In the latest design, these elements are removed and replaced by the greeting "Hello, [names]" at the top as well as the chat bubble icon in the upper left corner to access the user's conversation history.
Significant changes are also seen in the text field section. Previously, this column displayed a large prompt with the words "Type, talk, or share a photo to Gemini Advanced" flanked by the microphone and camera icon.
Now, this text column becomes more compact with a prompt that simplifies to "Type, talk, or share a photo." The microphone and camera icons are now in the lonjong-shaped text column, while the Gemini Live icon remains in the corner as a form of sound wave visualization.

When the user taps on the text field, there will be a subtle animation that brings back the previous interface. This transition makes the user experience smoother and focuses on the core function without sacrificing comfort.
This main screen redesign reminds of the simplicity of Google's search page display, which is designed to focus on functionality and ease of access. The main goal of this update is to provide a simpler and more intuitive experience for users, making it easier for them to access Gemini's main features.
With this update, Google is trying to maintain Gemini's appeal to users, especially in the midst of increasingly fierce competition in artificial intelligence technology and chatbot services. Although this design is already available on Android, iOS users still have to wait until a similar update is rolled out for their devices.
