JAKARTA - Samsung Electronics Co, on Monday (29/3), said that domestic sales of the latest flagship smartphone series, the Galaxy S21, surpassed 1 million units last week.

The South Korean tech giant said the S21, which was released in the country on January 29, reached the milestone 57 days after its launch, about a month ahead of its predecessor S20.

However, the sales pace of the S21 is slower than that of the S10, which surpassed the 1 million mark in 47 days in 2019.

Samsung has introduced a new Galaxy S device in mid-February every year, but this year, the company released the S21 in January with a lower price tag.

The entry model S21 is priced at 999,900 won (around Rp. 12.7 million) in South Korea, much cheaper than the low-end S20 variant which sells for 1.24 million won (around Rp.15.8 million).

Samsung says the base S21 model accounts for 52 percent of total S21 series sales, followed by the high-end S21 Ultra with 27 percent and the mid-range S21 + with 21 percent.

The S21 smartphone makes up 20 percent of its total sales in South Korea, and 60 percent of that is purchased online, the data show.

According to market researcher Strategy Analytics, Samsung became the top vendor in the global smartphone market in February with a 23.1 percent share, beating Apple Inc. with a share of 22.2 percent.
