JAKARTA - French football star Kylian Mbappe fell victim to an account hack X (previously known as Twitter) on August 29. The hackers used the account to promote a fake crypto scheme called MBAPPE, which caused huge financial losses to a number of investors.

This hack caught the public's attention when Mbappe's account began posting suspicious messages, including controversial views on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. However, the most striking is the intensive promotion of the crypto token $MBAPPE, which turns out to be just a trap.

According to data from an analytic firm Lookonchain, an investor who is not aware of this scheme created a new wallet and invested 7,156 SOLs equivalent to more than Rp15 billion into the $MBAPPE token. However, the investment value dropped drastically to only around Rp140 million after the token experienced a fast pump-and-dump cycle.

This doubtful token was launched on the Solana-based Pump.fun platform, where users can create meme coins quickly and cheaply. Although this platform appeals to many people, the Mbappe incident shows that the convenience also carries a huge risk.

Although many are trapped in this scheme, some have made a profit. For example, a crypto journalist, Colin Wu, reported that someone only invested 2 SOLs or around Rp. 4.5 million in a token of $MBAPPE and managed to sell it at a peak price, resulting in about 1,398 SOLs or more than Rp. 3 billion.

Many initially doubted the validity of the post, with speculation that Mbappe might be involved. However, it was finally revealed that his account had been hacked. Messages promoting the fake token have now been removed from his profile.

Reports show that fraudsters managed to sell more than 90,000 units of tokens before they disappeared. One of their tweets even shared wallet addresses and asked followers to send funds there, with the promise that the Real Madrid player would follow them on social media. Until now, it is not clear if anyone has been deceived by the trick.
