JAKARFTA - Google has launched a new feature called SOS Satellite on Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro devices. This feature allows users to send emergency messages via satellite, even while in a location without mobile signals. This feature is available for free for the first two years after the device purchase.

To try the SOS Satellite feature, users can go to Settings > Security & Emergency > SOS Satellite and select the "Try demo" option. When running a demo, the device will automatically turn off the mobile, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth connection. Users will then be asked to adjust the device's position to connect with the satellite. Once the connection is successful, users can simulate conversations with the Garmin Response Team, which will coordinate emergency assistance if this is a real situation.

Google is leveraging technology from Skyo to handle the process of sending and receiving messages from Pixel 9 to satellite. In addition, Garmin provides a 24-7 emergency response team tasked with coordinating aid based on information received from the device. In this demonstration, users will be assisted to find the best position under the open sky in order to connect with the satellite, and are asked to remain silent until the connection stabilizes.

If the user is in a real emergency situation, once the connection is established, the Pixel 9 will send the required information to the emergency response team. They will then send further questions and, if needed, will contact the 911 emergency service to be sent to the user's location.

In real conditions, after communicating with emergency services, users can choose the "Yes, I still need help" option if further assistance is needed. However, if the situation is under control, users can choose "No" to end communication and cancel requests for help.

This SOS Satellite feature provides additional sense of security for Pixel 9 users, ensuring they can still ask for help even in isolated conditions. Google hasn't announced a subscription fee after two years' free period ends, but it's expected to be an important tool for those who are often in remote areas or in emergency situations.

Google seems to be following in Apple's footsteps in offering similar features, but with a slightly different approach by relying on technology from Skyo and Garmin. With this feature, Pixel 9 users don't need to feel alone in critical situations, as emergency assistance is always available with just a few screen taps.
