JAKARTA - California Governor Gavin Newsom has officially issued a statement supporting efforts to limit the use of smartphones in California schools.

Newsom's statement came after previously a report from The New York Times stated where US General Surgeon Vivek Murthy said social media should be equipped with a warning label regarding the potential health impact.

In his writing, launching Engadget, Vivek Murthy explained that later the label, which requires congression action, will always remind parents and teenagers that social media has not been proven safe.

"As the Surgeon General emphasized, social media is endangering the mental health of our younger generation," Newsom said in a statement quoted from the official California government website on Thursday, June 20.

Under the law I signed in 2019, Newsom also hopes to cooperate with the Legislative Body to limit the use of smartphones during school days.

"When children and teenagers are at school, they have to focus on their lessons instead of the screen," concluded Newsom.
