JAKARTA - Sony Music Group (SMG) and its affiliates have sent letters to many technology companies and streaming services to warn them against using their music to train AI without permission.

In their latest statement, SMG said that they believe in AI potential in the future, but they want to ensure the innovation must still respect the rights of songwriters and record artists, including copyright, respected.

"We support artists and songwriters who lead in utilizing new technologies to support their artwork," the company wrote in a written statement.

Therefore, the affiliates of SMG, Sony Music Publishing (SMP) and Sony Music Entertainment (SME), made public statements confirming the concern, unless it is specifically permitted and explicitly by either SMEs or junior high schools, depending on the case.

They emphasized that technology companies should not use songs that include lyrics, text, data, music, video recordings, images, audio visual recordings, and so on to train their AI tools.

"For any purpose, including those related to training, development, or commercialization of any AI system, and in any way, including with bots, scripters or other automated processes, in each case as far as applicable law permits in all jurisdictions concerned," he stressed.

This statement reaffirms and does not reduce all previous SMP and/or SME rights requirements as well as their respective legal rights, all of which are strictly protected by law.
