JAKARTA - Telkomsel announced its collaboration with Ericsson, in activating the advanced Radio Access Network (RAN) Energy Efficiency feature, as well as conducting a trial of the 5G Standalone (SA) technology on the Telkomsel network.

Signed in the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024 at Barcelona, this collaboration shows the commitment of both parties in supporting the Net Zero 2060 target and reducing carbon emissions by 2030 in Indonesia.

"Through collaboration with Ericsson, Telkomsel can strengthen business sustainability in operational aspects by increasing its technical ability to provide innovative, reliable, and environmentally friendly telecommunications solutions, which are adapted to various needs of society and industry in Indonesia," said Telkomsel Network Director Indra Mardiatna in a statement quoted Wednesday, February 28.

By taking advantage of the latest developments in 5G technology and adopting the best practices in energy efficiency, Telkomsel continues to strive to become a catalyst that provides positive changes in order to realize a sustainable future.

Head of Ericsson Indonesia, Krishna Patil also said that this collaboration is part of their commitment to realize the maximum use of 5G and accelerate digital transformation in Indonesia.

The RAN Energy Efficiency feature allows Ericsson's radio devices to automatically enter low-power modes at relatively low network traffic and disable these functions when traffic is high.

With this feature, Telkomsel can handle increasing data demand, while reducing energy consumption without reducing the customer's digital experience.

In addition, the two companies have agreed to continue the course of 5G evolution, from the NSA's 5G commercial implementation (Non-Standalone) to the exploration of 5G SA, as well as obtaining new use cases by exploring Ericsson's Reduced Capability (RedCap) software.

Ericsson RedCap is a new access network (RAN) radio software solution in the 5G use case that allows more 5G connections from devices such as smartwatches, other devices, industrial sensors, and AR/VR devices.
