JAKARTA - Facebook owner Meta Platform Inc. will form a team to deal with disinformation and abuse of artificial intelligence generatively ahead of the general election of the European Parliament in June. This was done amid concerns about AI-generated election interference and false content.

The rapid growth of generative artificial intelligence, which can create text, images, and videos in seconds in response to demand, has sparked fears that the new technology could be used to disrupt massive general elections around the world this year.

The general election of the European Parliament will take place on June 6-9. The 720 members of the European parliament, along with the European Union government, make new policies and laws of the European Union.

"Towards the election, we will activate the Electoral Operations Center to identify potential threats and implement real-time mitigation," Marco Pancini, head of EU Meta affairs, said in a blogpost.

He said experts from the intelligence team, data science, engineering, research, operations, content policies, and company law would focus on fighting disinformation, dealing with influence operations, and addressing risks related to the abuse of generative artificial intelligence.

According to Pancini, Meta, which currently works with 26 independent fact-checking organizations in the European Union covering 22 languages, will add three new partners in Bulgaria, France, and Slovakia.

Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI, and 17 other tech companies earlier this month agreed to work together to prevent misleading artificial intelligence content from disrupting elections around the world this year.
