JAKARTA - Amazon MGM Studio, one of Hollywood's leading film production houses, is preparing a film project that tells the true story of Bitcoin's $4 billion robbery (Rp 63.22 trillion) on the Bitfinex crypto exchange in 2016.

The film, which has not been titled, will reportedly tell the life and crime of Heather "Razzlekhan" Morgan and Ilya Lichtenstein, two crypto robbers arrested by the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) in 2022.

As reported by Coinspeaker, the film was inspired by a New York Times article written by Nathaniel totaling in 2022, which reveals details about the biggest Bitcoin robbery in history. The film will be directed by Hannah Marks, known as director of the romantic comedy film Banana Split. In addition, this film will also be produced by Lili Reinhart, the actress who is famous for her role as Betty Cooper in the Riverdale series.

The latest film garapan of MGM Studio tells how Morgan and Lichtenstein, known as Cryptomen and airs, managed to hack Bitfinex's security system, one of the largest crypto exchanges in the world, and stole 120,900 Bitcoins, which at that time were worth around USD 72 million (IDR 1.13 trillion). They then launder money through various crypto and illicit exchange networks around the world.

Their actions were exposed after DOJ conducted an investigation for six years and managed to identify their digital footprint. In February 2022, DOJ arrested Morgan and Lichtenstein in Los Angeles and accused them of conspiring to commit robbery and money laundering. During the arrest, DOJ seized 95,000 Bitcoins worth about $3.6 million (IDR 56.9 billion), which was the largest seizure of crypto assets by DOJ in 2022.

In August 2023, the couple pleaded guilty to their crimes. Morgan, who goes by the pseudonym "Razzlekhan", admitted that he stole 120,900 Bitcoins from Bitfinex in court.

Lichtenstein admitted that he was the hacker responsible for the cyberattack on Bitfinex in 2016, using sophisticated tools to exploit the exchange and gain access to crypto assets. Both pleaded guilty to money laundering charges, with the possibility of facing a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

The film, which raised the Bitfinex crypto exchange burglary case, is expected to attract the attention of the global crypto community. However, Amazon MGM Studio has not disclosed detailed time regarding its release.
