JAKARTA - According to a New York Times report on Friday, December 22, Apple has started negotiations in recent weeks with news organizations and major publishers, seeking permission to use their material in the development of a company's generative artificial intelligence system.

The iPhone maker has submitted a multi-year deal worth at least $50 million to obtain a license to the news article archive, the report quoted people familiar with the discussion.

News organizations contacted by Apple include Condé Nast, Vogue and New Yorker publishers; NBC News; and IAC, owner of People, Daily Beast, and Better Homes and Gardens, the New York Times reported.

Several publishers contacted by Apple responded with a less enthusiastic attitude towards the offer. Apple has not responded to a request for comment from Reuters.

Big tech companies have made aggressive investments to integrate generative artificial intelligence. On the other hand, Apple has used this technology to improve its basic functions in its newest gadget products.

In October, Apple also introduced new MacBook Pro and iMac computers along with three new chips to support it, highlighting that the chips can be used by artificial intelligence researchers, whose works such as chatbots and other creations are often limited by the extent to which data can be stored in computer memory.
