JAKARTA - Google, which is owned by Alphabet Inc., plans to reorganize most of its advertising sales unit, which consists of 30,000 people. This was reported by The Information on Tuesday, December 19, citing sources familiar with the situation.

Sean Downey, who oversees ad sales to large customers in the United States, said in a department-wide meeting last week that Google plans to restructure its ad sales team. But they did not say whether the move would involve layoffs.

Google intends to consolidate staff, including through possible layoffs, by letting go of employees in its large customer sales unit that manages relationships with major advertisers.

The planned reorganization comes as Google increasingly relies on machine learning techniques to help customers buy more ads on its search engine, YouTube and other services.

In January this year, Alphabet announced plans to cut 12,000 jobs worldwide, equivalent to 6% of its total workforce worldwide.

In June, Google laid off several employees at mapping app Waze as it merged the app's advertising system with Google Ads technology.
