JAKARTA – Since 2018, WhatsApp can back up conversation history to Google Drive on Android. This storage system will not reduce the storage quota on Drive.

However, this policy will soon change. Starting December this year, backing up chat history from various messaging apps, including WhatsApp, will take up less storage space in the Drive cloud.

From the report by Engadget, this regulation only applies to WhatsApp Beta users. Ordinary application users are not expected to experience this change because the WhatsApp application is not yet available on all Android devices.

Each account on Google Drive will provide 15GB of free cloud storage space. This cloud space is directly connected to three applications, namely Gmail, Drive and Photos from Google.

Even though Google claims their storage space is three times larger than other mobile platforms such as Apple's iCloud, 15GB won't feel like much to people who like to capture moments and back up their data.

With this new policy, WhatsApp Beta users need to pay more attention to their application. The more data an application stores, the more space backups in Drive will take up.

To avoid wasting storage space, make sure to delete unneeded items from WhatsApp. If the application is already linked to a storage management tool, deleted items will automatically disappear from the storage space.
