JAKARTA - Huawei Technologies said it had sold 1.6 million Mate 60 Pro mobile phones in just six weeks. This was revealed by a research firm, when the Chinese tech giant came as a surprise with a strong demand for the revival of its top-class smartphones. Whereas currently the mobile market is slowing down.

According to Counterpoint Research, from the sale, more than 400,000 units were sold in the past two weeks, the period in which Apple actually launched the iPhone 15 on mainland China.

"In the first 17 days, iPhone 15 sales fell 4.5% compared to the iPhone 14," Counterpoint said, without providing specific figures.

Huawei did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the media on the report.

Huawei launched a surprising new product like the premium Mate 60 Pro phone at the end of August. Many analysts say the product uses domestically made chips. This has marked a breakthrough amid years of US technology sanctions against the company.

Mate 60 Pro, is in great demand in China, as the available stock runs out as soon as it arrives at shops and sales centers. "Creating the appearance of eternal availability," said senior Counterpoint analyst Ivan Lam.

Overall, the global smartphone market contracted by 8% to its lowest level in the third quarter in the past decade due to declining demand for key brands.

Huawei, the former Honor unit, and the Transition Group are the only brands to record annual growth in that period.

According to the Chinese Information and Communications Academy (CAICT) smartphone sales in August remained mostly flat, up 0.03% on an annual basis to 18.99 million units.
