JAKARTA - HMD Global, a license company for a Nokia branded smartphone, has become the first major smartphone company to produce its devices in Europe. The company has released its first 5G model made in Hungary, focusing on customers who care about data security.

"We are very pleased to produce Nokia XR21, our flagship 5G smartphone, in Europe. We are committed to investing in security, technology, and manufacturing processes that make our devices safer and more durable," Jean-Francois Baril, founder, chairman, and CEO of HMD Global said.

Before HMD opened operations in Hungary, Europe did not have large-scale smartphone manufacturing, as big companies like Apple and Samsung were producing their phones in Asia to save costs.

HMD said that the first model in Europe was designed for business customers, some of whom have asked for additional security levels with their IT security partners. HMD has been storing data in the European Union since 2019, with consumer and company data from all Nokia smartphones being processed on servers in Finland.

In 2016, the company signed a 10-year exclusive license deal with Nokia Oyj, the world's largest former mobile phone manufacturer, to make Nokia smartphones and tablets.

They announced in March that they would start producing in the European Union, which has prompted companies to set up production in key sectors such as semiconductors.

The European edition price of Nokia XR21, starting at 649 euros or 549 pounds, with a limited edition of 30 units of the European production line in the ice-colored platina, is available for purchase from the company's website at prices ranging from 699 euros (Rp10.6 million).
