JAKARTA - American Aeronautics and Space Agency (NASA) astronaut Frank Rubio from the United States (US) has broken records as the astronaut who carried out the longest mission during his longest stint in orbit.

On September 11, Rubio spent 355 days at International Space Station (ISS), nearly a year after his departure in September 2022.

Rubio himself has beat the longest previously held record by NASA astronaut Mark Vande Hei, who also comes from the US, set in 2022.

Rubio is scheduled to return to earth on 27 September to come. Prior to his return to earth schedule, Rubio was determined to set his next record by being on the ISS for 365 days or exactly one year.

"I think it will be a very good foundation for our country to achieve," Rubio said, quoted by sciencealert.

Dari pernyataannya yang disampaikan melalui chatbroadcast live bersama NASA, Rubio tak menyangkakan bahwa dirinya dapat memecahkan rekor.

Rubio initially went on a mission to the ISS for six months with two crew members of the spacecraft using Russian Soyuz rockets.

He should have returned in December with two other colleagues. However, due to a leak that may have occurred due to a small meteorite.

His return was canceled by Roscosmos, Russia's Space Aviation Agency, so Rubio and two of his colleagues needed to wait for another spacecraft instead.

Despite being too focused on his work in space, Rubio admits that one year in space has had extraordinary challenges, especially psychologically.
