Crypto Assistance For Forest Fire Victims In Maui Digalang By The Rock And Oprah Winfrey

JAKARTA - The crypto community joins to support the people of Maui through aid funds initiated by A-list celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson who receive donations in the form of cryptocurrencies.

In early August 2023, forest fires hit the island of Maui, in Hawaii causing huge property and private losses with more than 2,500 hectares on fire. The Rock and Oprah launched the People's Fund of Maui to provide direct financial support to those affected by the disaster.

In a tweet, The Rock confirmed that 100% of donations would be given to victims.

"Every adult resident living in an affected area and stranded by forest fires in Lahaina and Kula is entitled to receive $1200 per month to help them get through this recovery period," The Rock tweeted.

People's Fund of Maui accept donations in the form of various fiat and cryptocurrencies. In addition to receiving fiat donations from around the world, the funds also receive donations in Bitcoin, Ether, and Dogecoin, among various other alternatives.

As Oprah explains, the intention behind donating victims directly is to allow them to make decisions to return to their normal lives. "People can have their own agency, make their own decisions about what they need and what their family needs." That's our goal," he added.

In addition to efforts to support A-list celebrities, many other relief efforts are trying to help victims of forest fires.

The disaster aid organization All Hands and Hearts has also collected crypto donations and fiat to help residents of local Maui after the fire.

"Crypto donations such as other types of donations help provide important support after the devastating forest fires," Olga Ruggiero, head of organizational integration and events at All Hands and Hearts, was quoted as saying by Cointelegraph. "The crypto industry continues to unite with communities around the world in need of assistance.
