JAKARTA China's Cyber Administration (CAC), has received 110 requests from Chinese technology companies such as Huawei and Alibaba for approval of models that can be used to manipulate visual and audio data.

The companies, according to a list published on Friday September 1 by the CAC, sought approval to comply with rules set in December by CAC governing the use of deepfake technology.

This approval process is separate from CAC regulations against Chinese technology companies that want to develop a generationative artificial intelligence (AI) product, which has been in great demand since the success of US company-owned ChatGPT products, OpenAI.

Five Chinese technology companies, including Baidu and SenseTime Group, on Thursday 31 August have launched AI chatbots to the public after obtaining government approval.

Unlike chatbots, which produce completely new text, images, and audio based on user demand, deepfakes use AI technology to produce visual and audio data that are almost indistinguishable from the original and can easily be used for manipulation or misinformation broadcasting.
