JAKARTA - Canadian privacy regulators are launching a joint investigation into data collection and use by OpenAI, the parent company ChatGPT. They become the latest government to oversee artificial intelligence (AI) regulations.

Federal privacy regulators, along with colleagues in Quebec, British Columbia, and Alberta, will investigate whether OpenAI has obtained approval for the collection, use, and disclosure of citizens' personal information via ChatGPT, Canada's Privacy Commissioner Office announced on Thursday, May 25.

OpenAI has not yet responded immediately to a request for comment from Reuters.

The launch of this sensation-affected ChatGPT has sparked an AI race among tech giants such as Alphabet Inc and Meta, leaving the government in a difficult situation as they consider legislation to regulate the use of this radical new technology.

ChatGPT can produce articles, essays, jokes, and even poetry in response to demand. OpenAI, a private company backed by Microsoft Corp, made it available for free to the public at the end of November.

Canadian investigations will also check whether the company respects its "obligation to openness and transparency, access, accuracy, and accountability".

"Because this is an ongoing investigation, no additional details are available," the commissioner's office said, adding that the results of the investigation would be publicly reported.
