JAKARTA - The massive expansion of the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) chip production business in the United States (US), has worried its home country.
This is because it can weaken the semiconductor industry, which is important for Taiwan at a time when it is arguing with China. However, TSMC said there was no need to worry.
TSMC chairman Mark Liu said they had invested a total of US$60.4 billion for the most advanced 3nm (nanometer) and 5nm chips production at its plant, in Taiwan's Tainan Science Park southwest.
This figure is about 50 percent greater than the US$40 billion equivalent to Rp622 trillion which is planned to be invested in the US.
"(This) demonstrates TSMC's commitment to Taiwan," Liu said at a ceremony at Tainan's Tawinian Science Park, marking the expansion and start of mass production of 3nm chips.
Liu also explained that although TSMC has built chip factories in the US and Japan due to the country's demand and clients from around the world, the majority of TSMC's production remains in Taiwan.
Not long ago, an allegation said the company was also considering building its first European chip factory in Germany.
As reported by Nikkei Asia, quoted on Friday, December 30, investment in Tainan has created around 10,000 high-tech jobs and 23,500 construction positions.
Liu added, this is because semiconductors will become more important in the technology supply chain over the next 10 years.
The TSMC plant in the US will make chips using 3nm technology, but for now the 2nm technology remains fully manufactured in Taiwan.
