JAKARTA - Honda, one of the world's largest motorcycle manufacturers, announced that it will release at least 10 new electric bicycle models globally in the next three years. This is part of their larger strategy to become carbon neutral by 2040.

The manufacturer did not release any details about a particular model but said its goal was to achieve annual sales of 1 million units in the next five years and 3.5 million units or about 15 percent of total sales by 2030.

Honda is considered the largest motorcycle company in the world, which has sold more than 300 million motorcycles since the founding of this factory. It is said that switching to electric powertrain is not a small task for this Japanese company.

Reported by The Verge, the transfer to electrical energy could mean heavier vehicles and more expensive price labels in the near future. This will affect their sales if demand starts to weaken. High prices in particular could be a barrier for customers in the developing country's market, where motorcycle sales are currently the strongest.

The company points to the ranks of Honda e: Business Bike for commercial customers, which was first introduced in 2021, as an indication of the direction to be planned for future products.

For regular customers, Honda plans to launch two private EV models between 2024 and 2025 in Asia, Europe, and Japan. The company will also develop large, medium and large sports motorcycles electrified in the segment it calls "FUN categories".

Honda is also experimenting with a variety of fuels, and announced that it will introduce a flexible fuel model, namely gasoline-pannel fuel, in India and Brazil.

In India, Honda will also launch a battery-sharing service for electric three-wheeled taxis also called "becak", later this year. Honda wants to popularize battery sharing in other Asian countries, where this technology is more widely used than in the US and Europe.

Honda didn't just shock the lineup of its motorbikes. The company recently launched its Prologue, its first long-range all-electric SUV, which will go on sale in 2024. The company says it plans to release a wave of 30 hybrid vehicles, batteries, and fuel cells by 2030.
