JAKARTA - Qualcomm is rumored to be presenting a chipset with 5G connectivity for the cheapest line of smartphones. The plan is for the chipset to be used, namely the Snapdragon 4 series. Phones with 4 series chips, such as the Moto E7 Plus, are generally sold for under 200 US dollars or the equivalent of Rp. 2 million.

"Qualcomm continues to pave the way for large-scale commercialization of 5G, and the expansion of 5G into our Snapdragon 4 series is expected to address a region that currently has around 3.5 billion smartphone users," Qualcomm president Cristiano Amon said on the company's official website.

The Verge proclaimed, Thursday 3 September, in 2019, only Snapdragon 8 series phones offer 5G support. This year, Qualcomm has seen its lineup expand significantly, with the current Snapdragon 865 lineup requiring a separate 5G modem, along with cheaper options in the 7 and 6 series such as the Snapdragon 765 and Snapdragon 690.

“The Snapdragon 4 series 5G Mobile Platform is designed to exceed expectations for the mass market segment by bringing a wide range of features dominated by the upper and middle class to a wider audience. This will fulfill the promise of making 5G accessible to all smartphone users, "added Amon.

The Snapdragon 4 series is specifically aimed at the international market, and this new chip will support some of the first accessible 5G phones on that market. With connectivity changes to the new chipset, Qualcomm will now also integrate 5G into its line of mobile phones with the 8 series, 7 series and 6 series chipsets.

According to Qualcomm, 5G networks are currently only available in 35 countries, and that number is likely to increase in the next few years. It is likely that this latest chipset will be used by several companies in regions such as India and China.

It is known, over the last few years cellphone manufacturers such as Motorola, Oppo and Xiaomi have all launched series 4 devices and will probably be the first to adopt chipsets with the new 5G connectivity.

Unfortunately, Qualcomm hasn't announced many details for this 4-series chip, such as what modem it will use, whether it will be integrated into the chipset or will it require a standalone unit inside the phone.

The good news is in Qualcomm's schedule to launch the platform in early 2021, and it is hoped that phones equipped with this chipset will launch in the first quarter.
