JAKARTA - Space travel or spacewalk that is often done by astronomers is an interesting thing, and a challenge for them. This week, two Russian cosmonauts will do it.
The two will take a spacewalk outside the International Space Station (ISS) to prepare for the station's new Prich module to receive the spacecraft, on Wednesday, January 19.
"Expedition 66 Commander Anton Shkaplerov and Flight Engineer Pyotr Dubrov of Roscosmos will begin their planned seven-hour space journey by exiting the Poisk module on the side of space overlooking the Russian station segment," NASA said in a statement.
"During the spacewalk, cosmonauts will install handrails, rendezvous antennas, television cameras and target docks on Prichal, which automatically dock to the Nauka multipurpose laboratory module in November."
To distinguish the two, NASA detailed the clothes they wore. Shkaplerov will play a member of the extravehicular crew 1 (EV1) and will wear the Russian Orlan spacesuit with red stripes.
Meanwhile, Dubrov will wear a space suit with blue stripes as extravehicular crew member 2 (EV2). This will be the third space trip in Shkaplerov's career and the fourth for Dubrov.
The station's first spacewalk in 2022 will also be the 246th spacewalk for the assembly, maintenance and upgrade of the Earth-orbiting space station.
Launching Digital Trends, Monday, January 17, if you're interested in watching it, NASA will be broadcasting the spacewalk live on Wednesday, January 19, starting at 6 a.m. ET (3 a.m. PT), with the spacewalk itself set to kick off at 7 p.m. morning ET (4am PT).
The space journey is expected to take 7.5 hours overall. You can go to the NASA website to watch it.
