Pandemic Is Not Over, BWF Cancels 4 Tournaments In Asia

JAKARTA - The worrisome pandemic situation has prompted the Badminton World Federation (BWF) to issue an important decision. Four tournaments that took place in the East Asia region in September were canceled.

On the official BWF website quoted by Antara, Wednesday, July 29, the four tournaments that were canceled were: Taipei Open (September 1-6), Korea Open (September 8-13), China Open (September 15-20), and Japan Open. (September 22-27).

"The decision to cancel this tournament was made in the interests of the health of the players, spectators, volunteers and member associations. We are very disappointed to have to cancel the tournament, but the safety and health of everyone involved is of utmost importance at this time," said BWF Secretary General Thomas Lund in its official statement.

BWF said the decision was taken after going through technical considerations, observing the current situation, and consulting with the host of the event concerned.

"I would like to emphasize that the association members have made significant efforts in their area during this process to be patient and remain committed to the BWF. We feel the disappointment of many people around the world who are looking forward to the return of badminton, and appreciate all the great support from fans and partners. because we continue to try to hold tournaments for the rest of the 2020 season, "he added.

Lund further said: "BWF will continue to adapt to changes to ensure any badminton activity fully complies with the regulations of the World Health Organization (WHO), local health authorities, and international and domestic travel restrictions."

After this announcement, BWF and its partners will strictly monitor and comply with all government guidelines regarding the upcoming tournament. Updates on the rest of the tournament for 2020 will be made as soon as possible.
