JAKARTA - Young Indonesian lifter Satrio Adi Nugroho won a gold medal and set a world record when appearing at the U-17 Youth World Weightlifting Championship in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Wednesday night.
The gold was presented after he broke the world record for youth in the 55 kg class in the snatch.
Citing Antara, Thursday, Satrio, who joined the national training two years ago, was previously not considered in the 55 kg class but was able to compete with his toughest competitors, namely the host lifter and Thailand.
In the first batch of snatch, the lifter from West Java successfully lifted 101 kg of weight. But failed when trying to increase the load to 107 kg on the second occasion.
In the third experiment, Satrio was "desperate" to put the figure at 111kg or a difference of 4kg from the previous batch. However, it turned out that he successfully completed his lift and broke the world record previously held by Vietnamese lifter Do Tu Tung with a force of 110 kg.
Unfortunately, the good record in the snatch was not followed by maximum results in the clean and jerk category.
Satrio failed to complete his lift in three attempts, namely 127kg on the first and second occasions and 128 kg on the last try.
For the clean and jerk class, Thai lifter Patsapong Thong Suk took first place with a weight of 124 kg. The second position is occupied by the Turkish lifter, Ertugul Secgin with a force of 123 kg, and the third Russian lifter, Roman Danilov 119 kg.
However, Indonesian weightlifting coach Dirdja Wihardja said that Satrio's struggle was maximal, especially since this was his debut in an international championship.

"He was nervous when he appeared in the clean and jerk. In fact, in daily training, he is able to lift 140 kg of weight. This is his first experience appearing in a world championship, it's natural that he is a little nervous," Dirdja said in his statement, Thursday.
"But what is certain is that it can make a surprise because it is not taken into account," he said again.
Meanwhile, another teenage lifter Najla Khoirunnisa took home three bronze medals in the 45 kg class after registering a total lift of 142 kg (62 kg snap, 80 kg clean, and jerk).
