JAKARTA - The West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) contingent won the first gold medal from the sport of rock climbing in the women's team boulder number at the XX Papua National Sports Week (PON).

The chairman of the XX NTB PON Contingent Mori Hanafi said he was grateful and greatly appreciated the acquisition of the first gold medal for NTB from the rock climbing branch.

"Hopefully this first gold medal will open the door for the flow of gold medals from all branches followed by the NTB contingent, exceeding the targeted 17 gold medals," Mori said in a written statement received by Antara in Mataram, Thursday.

The four rock climbing athletes who contributed the first gold medal for NTB, namely Nurul Iqamah, Anggun Yolanda, Ayu Fatullah, and Ade Irma Suryani.

"We congratulate the NTB women's rock climbing team and all its supporting officials," said Mori.

In the match which was held at the rock climbing arena in Mimika, Thursday, September 30, Ari Purnomo's team secured the victory. They were able to beat the teams from East Java, West Java, DKI Jakarta, East Kalimantan, and Riau.

Mori, who is also the deputy chairman of the NTB Regional Representative Council (DPRD), admitted that the women's team boulder rock climbing was actually only favored to win a bronze medal, but in fact, they were able to donate a gold medal for the NTB contingent.

"Boulder rock climbing for the women's team is an unfavorable number because they are only targeted to get bronze, but instead get gold. Hopefully, this is a good start for the NTB contingent," Mori hoped.

Furthermore, he revealed that there are still two more match numbers in the same branch, which will be held today, Thursday.

The two numbers are the lead for the women's team, which is still in the qualifying stage, and the boulder for the men's team, which is also still in the qualification stage.

"In the women's lead number, it is recorded that there will be three rock climbing athletes from NTB, namely Nurul Iqamah, Anggun Yolanda, and Ayu Fatullah. While in the men's boulder number there will be four athletes, namely Azhar Wan Akbar, Joni Kasria, Fauzan Nurul Islam, and Zulius Mustofa Aji," said Mori.
