Menpora Wants Indonesia To Host Sudirman Cup 2027

Pelatnas PBSI Cipayung athletes are preparing for the 2025 Sudirman Cup (doc. PBSI).

JAKARTA - The Minister of Youth and Sports (Menpora), Dito Ariotedjo, wants Indonesia to host the next edition of the Sudirman Cup in 2027.

This was conveyed by Dito when he took the time to see the simulation match towards the 2025 Sudirman Cup in Cipayung, East Jakarta, on Monday, April 21, 2025.

Dito said that he had encouraged the General Chair of the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI), Fadil Imran, to make Indonesia participate in the bidding for the host of the mixed team event.

"I am sure that later we can become good hosts of the Sudirman Cup. This will increase the motivation of athletes and the badminton ecosystem which will be better," he said.

Indonesia has only acted as the host once in the history of the Sudirman Cup. The only opportunity occurred in the first edition of the tournament, namely in 1989.

At that time, Indonesia managed to come out as a champion after defeating South Korea in the final round. After that, Indonesia's best achievement in this event was six times as runners-up.

Dito himself deliberately attended the PBSI Cipayung National Training Center to provide support to the 2025 Sudirman Cup team which will leave for China with the ambition to end the title drought.

"I am here because I want to give encouragement directly to the athletes who will go to China. Hopefully this can give achievements."

"Earlier, it was not easy to see in the data, it turned out that in the Sudirman Cup Indonesia, it was only once a champion," he said.

The 2025 Sudirman Cup will take place from 27 April to 4 May 2025 at Fenghuang Gymnasium, Xiamen, China. In total there are 16 countries that are contestants.

This year Indonesia comes with the status of the second seed, under China. Indonesia will start its journey from Group D with India, England, and Denmark.
