China Open 2024: Osaka Meets Gauff In The Fourth Round

JAKARTA Japanese tennis star and former world number one, Naomi Osaka, advanced to the fourth round of the 2024 China Open to lock up clashes with Coco Gauff.

Osaka continued her journey in the tournament after winning two sets over American tennis player Katie Volynets, with a final score of 6-3 and 6-2 on Monday, September 30, 2024, WIB night.

The owner of the four Grand Slam titles won his first meeting with the world's 60th ranked tennis player within one hour 17 minutes.

"For me, I want to continue to develop from my last match. I have to try to be aggressive from the start," Osaka said after the match, quoted by the WTA website.

Osaka will next prepare for an important battle in the fourth round against fourth seed from the United States, Coco Gauff.

Previously, the two players had clashed four times. The meeting will be the first meeting between the two Grand Slam champions after more than two years.

In the previous four clashes, Osaka and Gauff took turns beating each other every year between 2019 and 2022. Gauff also won the last meeting in San Jose in August 2022 with a score of 6-4 and 6-4.

"I think this will be a very interesting test for me. He played very well this year. I'm excited to play (against him)," said Osaka.

This is Osaka's first appearance in Beijing since she won the China Open title in 2019. The 26-year-old has an outstanding winning-loss record, which is 13-2 in the event.
