JAKARTA - Belgian national team coach Roberto Martinez wants the squad for the 2020 European Cup finals to be enlarged from 23 players to 26 players.

The European Cup is scheduled to start on June 11, 2021 after being postponed last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"I hope, given the current pandemic, the rules for this year's European Cup can be readjusted, and we can have 26 or even 27 players," Martinez said as quoted by Antara, Wednesday.

According to the Spanish national coach, a number of national team coaches from other countries agreed with his opinion, including the Italian national team manager Roberto Mancini.

"There have been a number of discussions, mainly between England and Italy. Everyone in the discussion reacted the same way. They want to enlarge the squad by, for example, one more player per position. I think it will be the right decision, "said Martinez.

Belgium are in Group B of the 2020 European Cup along with Finland, Denmark and Russia.
