Nurul Akmal Breaks PON Record And Gets Gold

JAKARTA The lifter from Aceh, Nurul Akmal, successfully broke the record for the National Sports Week (PON) after winning a gold medal in this year's edition which took place in Aceh-North Sumatra 2024.

The athlete, who is familiarly called Amel, triumphed in the +87 kilogram class with a total force of 248 kilograms while competing at the Harapan Bangsa Stadium Complex (SHB), Aceh, on Tuesday, September 10, 2024.

He broke the PON record in the clean and jerk class with a total load of 143 kilograms, ahead of the previous record at 142 kilograms. As for the snatch he managed with 105 kilograms.

Amel, who was appointed as a fire lighter in the main kaldron during the opening ceremony of the 2024 PON, was the fourth gold medal contributor for the Aceh weightlifting team.

In the class that Amel participated in, the silver medal was secured by Jambi athlete, Jihan Syahrini, who was successful with a total force of 225 kilograms. Rizka Oktaviana got a bronze medal from West Kalimantan with a total force of 219 kilograms.

"She is the only female weightlifter from Aceh who has won a gold medal at three PONs in a row," said Aceh's head coach, Effendi Eria, in a statement received.

Amel was previously also recorded on the highest podium to take home the gold medal when the PON took place in West Java in 2016 and PON 2021 in Papua.

Before appearing at PON 2024, the 31-year-old athlete was part of the Indonesian contingent that appeared at the 2024 Paris Olympics in July-August 2024.
