Gregoria Mariska Withdraws From Nearest Asian Tournament

JAKARTA - Indonesian women's singles Gregoria Mariska Tunjung had to withdraw from a number of Asian tournaments, including the Japan Open and the Korea Open 2024, due to chickenpox.

According to PBSI, Gregoria has not felt well since Friday, August 16, 2024. On Saturday, August 17, 2024, he was immediately rushed and treated at Medistra Hospital, Jakarta.

PBSI PP Pelatnas doctor, Tjahyadi Soegiono, said that based on the results of laboratory examinations, Gregoria was exposed to the chickenpox virus.

"From the results of the lab in the form of blood tests that have been carried out, that Gregoria has a viral infection and was declared infected with varicella (waterpox)," said Tjahyadi.

In addition to missing the Asian tournament, the bronze medalist at the 2024 Paris Olympics also canceled his flight to the capital city of Nusantara (IKN) to participate in the celebration of the 79th Indonesian Independence Day.

Previously, Gregoria was very enthusiastic about welcoming several of the closest tournaments after appearing at the 2024 Paris Olympics, one of which was the Japan Open 2024.

In the tournament which will take place on August 20-25, 2024, a number of tough rivals are absent.

According to the BWF page, as many as seven women's singles were absent at the Japan Open 2024, five of whom were badminton players who had just appeared in Paris 2024.

One of the big names who did not participate was South Korean singles, An Se-young, who won gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Then, there were also silver winners at the 2024 Olympics, He Bing Jiao (China), Carolina Marin (Spain) who became semifinalists in Paris, Chen Yu Fei (China), and Pusarla V. Shindu (India).

"Hopefully, anyway, but there are still some leading players who have come down. I haven't seen the drawing yet. So, I hope whatever the results will be, it will be maximized."

"Hopefully with that I can take advantage of yesterday's performance and be more confident at the Japan Open 2024 and maybe the next tournaments," said Gregoria before deciding to withdraw.

Before withdrawing from the Japan Open 2024, Gregoria was the fourth seed. He will undergo his first match in the round of 32 by serving as Hong Kong's representative, Lo Sin Yan Happy.

Meanwhile, the superior position is occupied by Tai Tzu Ying as the first seed, then Akane Yamaguchi (2), Wang Zhi Yi (3), Han Yue (5), Aya Ohori (6), Beiwen Zhang (7), and Nozomi Okuhara (8).
