Canceled Departure, Bruno Fernandes' Highest Salary At Manchester United

JAKARTA - Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has canceled his departure. He, on the other hand, received a contract extension from MU until 2027. His salary was raised. Fernandes also became the player with the highest salary at the club.

Fernandes had created controversy when he stated that he wanted to consider his future at MU. This was said before Fernandes defended Portugal at Euro 2024. Fernandes' statement hinted that he wanted to leave Old Trafford.

Moreover, he has been at MU for four years since being recruited from Sporting in 2020. Fernandes has also given two titles, the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup. It didn't take long for him to be captain of the team to replace Harry Maguire who could not be consistent as a defender.

Not only that, Fernandes was able to show him as a productive midfielder. He has scored 79 goals and made 67 assists during 234 appearances with the Red Devils.

After making a statement that implies wanting to leave, Fernandes has also become the target of a number of European clubs and Saudi Arabia. He was even mentioned following his senior, Cristiano Ronaldo at Al Nassr. In addition, Bayern Munich and Barcelona are interested in recruiting him.

However, MU immediately renewed his contract. Negotiations about the contract extension did not take long and Fernandes signed it. In the latest contract, MU maintains Fernandes until 2026 with the option of an extension of 12 months.

"Everyone knows how high my spirits are for Manchster United," Fernandes was quoted as saying by The Sun.

"I fully realize the responsibility and importance of this uniform. It takes high dedication and enthusiasm to want to play for this extraordinary club," he said.

"I will not sign a contract if I have no confidence that my best moment with United will arrive," he said again.

Fernandes said he had many special moments with MU. Including bringing MU to the FA Cup champion after defeating one Manchester City rival with a score of 2-1. This is what makes this 29-year-old player choose to stay rather than move to a new club.

"I have had a lot of special moments here. I heard my name mentioned in the song [superporter] at Stretford End [the fanatical fan stands from the MU hardline], scoring a hattrck against Leeds United [One of MU's arch rivals], leading the team out of Old Trafford in European matches, lifting the trophy at Wembley," he said.

With Fernandes' previous contract extension of 220 thousand is also increased. Now, he pockets a salary of 300 thousand or 6 billion rupiah every week that delivers him as the player with the highest salary at the club.

However, Fernandes' salary is the same as that of senior midfielder Casemiro. Now, both of them are the highest-paid players at MU.

MU played the inaugural match of the English Premier League competition by hosting Fulham at Old Trafford, Saturday, August 17, 2024 in the morning WIB. Erik ten Hag's team is expected to win their first victory through that match.
