Important History Of Rock Climbing At The 2024 Olympics

Veddriq Leonardo made history for Indonesian rock climbing at the 2024 Paris Olympics (doc. NOC Indonesia).

JAKARTA The success of rock climbing (sports) has won a gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics in making its own history.

The gold was contributed by Veddriq Leonardo from the men's speed number after defeating Chinese representative Wu Peng in the final, on Thursday, August 8, 2024, evening WIB.

This is Indonesia's ninth gold medal in Olympic history as well as the first since the individual speed number rock climbing was contested. Previously, at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the lead border and speed numbers were still combined.

In addition, this is the first time Indonesia has won a gold medal from other sports besides badminton in the history of participating in the world's largest multi-events.

Badminton this year failed to get a gold medal. The record is similar to the 2012 Olympics which took place in London.

At that time, badminton did not get a medal at all, aka worse than this year, which was able to get bronze through the women's singles Gregoria Mariska Tunjung.

Veddriq's journey to get gold in Paris went quite smoothly. Starting with defeating the host's representative, Bassa Mawem, in the quarter-finals after he recorded a time of 4.88 seconds, while the opponent scored 5.26 seconds.

In the semifinals, Veddriq met Rezza Ali Pour (Iran), who had previously been his opponent in the 2022 Asian Games semifinals. At that time the athlete from Pontianak lost and won a bronze medal.

Veddriq then replied to the defeat after recording a time of 4.78 seconds and Rezza followed him with a time of 4.84 seconds.

Veddriq has previously achieved the opponent in the previous final at the small final of the Hangzhou Asian Games. The clash was won by Veddriq so that the bronze medal became his.

Veddriq again showed his class in the final in Paris with a record 4.75 seconds or a narrow 0.02 second lead from Wi Peng who brought home the silver medal.
