This victory is Philipsen's third win at Tour this year after winning etape 10 and 13. Meanwhile, Green jersey holder Biniam Girmay, who has also won three etapes, fell in the last 2 km.

Slovenian Tadj Pogacar maintains his yellow jersey with a three-minute and nine-second lead over Jonas Vingegaard in general classification, while Remco Evenepoel is still behind for more than five minutes.

The Alpecin-Deceuninck team controlled the sprint perfectly, allowing Mathieu Van der Poel to do the perfect lead-out for his Belgian teammate, Philipsen, to win comfortably.

"I'm very happy after an amazing team effort. It's always fun to be able to win together, and that's what we did today," said Philipsen. "I don't see an accident involving Girmay. We're trying to position ourselves and focus on our own lead-outs. I hope everyone is okay."

"I feel good, I have a good rest day (on Monday), my condition increased during the Tour. So I'm sure if we can manage well today, we can win. It's a tough level, so three wins are good. We can be proud," he added.

Philipsen crossed the finish line in front of Phil Bauhaus, Alex Kristoff, and Sam Bennett. Girmay finally returned to his bike with the help of his team-mates and finished the race. However, the Eritrean rider saw his advantage in the sprint classification reduced to 32 points.

While there are no more flat etapes on the Tour, the green jersey is still very open with the intermediate sprint in the next five etapes.

"Everything is possible. He (Girmay) is climbing really well," added Philipsen. "I hope he's fine after the accident because he doesn't deserve to lose like this. I'll try whatever I can because the heavy stage is coming."

Mark cap from England, who has won 35 etape records at Tour in his career, finished 17th in his potential etape sprint.

Etape 17 on Wednesday 17 July, was a 178 km journey from Saint-Paul-Trois-Chateaux to SuperdEVoluy.
