Ahead Of UERO 2024: Christian Eriksen's Late Goal Brings Denmark To A 2-1 Win Over Sweden

JAKARFTA - Christian Eriksen scored an amazing winner in stoppage time to bring Denmark to a 2-1 win over Sweden in a pre-Euro 2024 friendly at Parken Stadium on Wednesday, June 5. This achievement confirmed its position as Denmark's most reliable creative power ahead of the tournament in Germany.

In just over a minute, the home side managed to break the deadlock when the Swedish defense fell asleep in the first corner of the match, and Eriksen found Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg at the near post for an easy finish.

As fans wearing red uniforms hoped it would be the start of a major attack, Sweden immediately responded through Alexander Isak, who took advantage of Jens Cajuste's blocked shot and hit the ball past Frederik Ronnow in the Denmark goal seven minutes later.

Eriksen, who is 32 years old and has collapsed due to a heart attack on the same field in Denmark's opening match at Euro 2020 against Finland, played a key role throughout the match. His curling shot that dived in the 86th minute gave Denmark a proper victory.

Sweden's Danish coach, Jon Dahl Tomasson, was inducted into the Danish football Hall of Fame before kick-off, and his team defended well but less sharply in attacks, where Isak and Dejan Kulusevski were often blocked by Danish defenses.

Denmark coach Kasper Hjulmand has awarded Tomasson for his work so far in which Sweden, who failed to qualify for the Euros under previous coach Janne Andersson, paved the way for Tomasson to take over.

"They played very aggressively one on one. I think in general we gave too much control in the first half, and they got chances they shouldn't have," Hjulmand told TV2.

"We should have scored more goals... we have to look at the chances Sweden got, because we can't give them a chance," he added.

Eriksen was delighted with the assist for the opener rather than scoring a winning goal, having received some criticism for a poor set piece in qualifying.

"That's good, and it's good that we scored from set pieces, I think it created a bit of calm in our team," he told TV2.

Denmark will complete their Euro 2024 preparations with home matches against Norway on Saturday before leaving for Germany, where they will face Slovenia, England, and Serbia in Group C.
