Successfully Exceeding Target, PSSI Will Set Higher Target For Shin Tae-yong

Shin Tae-yong will receive the next target for the Indonesian national team (doc. PSSI).

JAKARTA - The coach of the Indonesian national team, Shin Tae-yong, will certainly get a higher target than PSSI in guarding the squad in various tournaments.

This happened after he succeeded in bringing the U-23 Indonesian national team to fourth place in the 2024 U-23 Asian Cup.

Although the agenda leads to the 2024 Paris Olympics, the position of Indonesia U-23 which only reaches fourth place makes their hopes of competing in the world's largest multi-event run aground.

However, PSSI Executive Committee (Exco) member, Arya Sinulingga, assessed that the achievement of the South Korean tactician and his team had exceeded the target.

Therefore, Arya then said PSSI would hold a meeting with Shin Tae-yong to discuss the new target after the two parties reached an agreement to extend cooperation until 2027.

"We will definitely meet in the near future. We will definitely negotiate in many ways, the KPI (key performance indicators) was previously achieved. We must respect something," said Arya Sinulingga in his statement quoted Monday, May 13, 2024.

"Then, in the future until 2027, you know. Remember, Mr. Erick (Thohir) as the General Chair, he never wanted to make contracts outside of his management area. His management is limited to 2027, so Shin Tae-yong also has a contract until 2027," said Arya.

Since being appointed coach of the Indonesian national team in December 2019, Shin Tae-yong has made several history. Starting from passing the Indonesian national team to the last 16 of the 2023 Asian Cup, upgrading FIFA to 134th position, and finally bringing Indonesia U-23 into the top four of the 2024 U-23 Asian Cup.

Reflecting on these achievements, PSSI, said Arya, wanted Shin Tae-yong to bring the Garuda Squad to fly higher.

However, he was reluctant to reveal details regarding what targets the federation would set for the 53-year-old coach.

"Please input us all, what are the targets we achieve by 2024, by the end of 2025? Then, what targets are in 2026 and 2027?"

"We have to give input. I mean, we ask for input about the target," he said.

"In the top 100 (FIFA ranking)? Isn't it too small? Now, we are ranked 134. If we qualify for the third round of the 2026 World Cup Qualification, it could be even higher," said Arya.
