JAKARTA - The World Athletics Agency on Wednesday announced it would be the first international federation to award cash at the Olympics starting in Paris this year.

"Golden medalists from every 48 athletic sports numbers in Paris will receive a prize of 50,000 US dollars (Rp792.4 million) for individual and team winners," AFP reported on Wednesday.

World Athletics has prepared a total prize of 2.4 million US dollars through the allocation of profit-sharing funds from the International Olympic Committee received by the federation every four years.

However, the prize money that can be given immediately is only for gold medalists, while silver and bronze medal winners will be awarded after the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.

"The awarding of a prize money for Olympic gold medalists is an important moment for the World Athletics Agency and athletics as a whole, underlining our commitment to empowering athletes and recognizing the important role they play in the success of each Olympics," World Athletics President Sebastian Coe said as quoted by ANTARA, Wednesday, April 10.

"We can now also fund gold medals for athletes in Paris, with a commitment to award the three medalists at the LA28 Olympics," he said.

"This is a continuation of the journey that we started in 2015. We saw that all the money received by World Athletics from the International Olympic Committee for the Olympics was immediately returned to our federation," he said.

The 2024 Paris Olympics take place from July 26 to August 11.
