JAKARTA - Several Indonesian national team players got new clubs after their appearance in the 2023 Asian Cup. After Shayne Pattynama, Elkan Baggott, and Pratama Arhan, Asnawi Mangkualam Bahar joined the new club.

The captain of the Garuda Squad ended togetherness with the South Korean club, Jeonnam Dragons. He officially moved to Thailand to join Port FC at the end of January 2024.

"Resmi. A big deal has been made. Port announced the acquisition of Asnawi, captain of the Indonesian national team," wrote Port FC's official Instagram account.

"From competitors, he has the potential to become a team member. Asnawi is a new player in the Thai League, but he is not a new player for Thai League players."

"Thank you to Indonesian football fans for following our club! Please give support to our club."

Asnawi is scheduled to immediately join the Port FC training after defending the Indonesian national team in the 2023 Asian Cup. He has also given a speech to the club's fans nicknamed Port Lions.

"Hello, Port FC, see you in Bangkok. Sawadikap (thank you)," said Asnawi.

Port FC has released the squad jersey number on Monday, January 5, 2024. Asnawi will wear the number 5 jersey during the second half of the 2023/2024 Thai League 1 season.

It is not clear how long Asnawi's contract has been at Port FC. What is clear is that he will play in Thai League 1 until the end of the 2023/2024 season.

"Port FC closed an important agreement at the end of the footballer's buying and selling market after announcing the acquisition of right-back Asnawi Mangualam, captain of the Indonesian national team, to join the squad to fight in the second half of the official 2023/2024 season as a quota for ASEAN," wrote Port FC.

Meanwhile, Asnawi Mangkualam Bahar became the second Indonesian national team player in the history of Port FC to ever play there.

Previously, there was Terens Puhiri who had defended Port FC in 2018.

Asnawi impressed with the Garuda Squad in the 2023 Asian Cup. He helped the Indonesian national team advance to the last 16 for the first time in the history of participation in the tournament.

The right-back from Makassar did steal the attention. He has joined several national teams of age groups, namely U-16, U-19, and U-23.

The 24-year-old has played 38 matches with the Indonesian national team and helped the team become runners-up in the 2020 AFF Cup and the 2022 edition semifinalists.

Asnawi Mangkualam is indeed ahead of Buana outside Indonesia. After defending PSM Makassar, he left for Ansan Greeners who played in K League 2 or the second level of South Korea's competition in 2021.

He has packed 66 games and scored two goals and five assists.

In January 2023, he moved to fellow K League 2 club, Jeonnam Dragons. However, his togetherness was only half a season there before joining Port FC.

Currently, Port FC is at the top of Thailand League 1, Thailand's top level competition. They are in third place with 29 points from 15 matches, below Bangkok United and Buriram United.
